Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: One beautiful and well-behaved dog; one aggressive. Well-trained dogs are a joy on the trails; aggressive dogs should not be taken on these mountains.
Bugs
Bugs: Many, especially coming down Rainbow Trail and Bog Brook at the end of the day. Both black flies and mosquitoes. Bring your head-net, for sure.

Comments
Comments: This was my first ascent of Carter Dome from the east, and it was great. Of course, except for the knee-deep "swim" near the beginning (third crossing from the Bog Brook trailhead) was an inauspicious start, and the swarms of black flies and mosquitoes near the end. And there was a lot of mud in between. But it was a treat going up Bog Brook and Wildcat River Trails instead of the normal, crowded approach from the west. Lots of climbers once I reached Carter-Moriah, but not as many as I had feared. Watch out for the 1/4m patch of collapsing monorail between Carter Dome and Hight. The descent on Rainbow Trail was really nice, until the flies found me.
