 | Dog-Related Notes: |
I saw several dogs. It seems like a long and challenging hike with so many rocks. Best suited to dogs who hike regularly. I saw a couple who wanted to go home. |
|
 | Bugs: |
Peak black flies! They were not deterred by bug spray. The Kinsman Pond tent site caretaker wore a bug net over his head as he made the rounds. I'm not usually worried too much about bugs but they were persistent and relentless on this trip, especially on Sunday as it was a beautiful, warm day with low winds. |

I knew it would be busy since Sunday was the first sunny day after a long rainy stretch. I saw almost 50 people on the trails on Sunday, as there were some groups as well as the usual solo hikers, through hikers, and friends or families. Glorious weather with many views along Kinsman Ridge Trail. Challenging hike as you have to keep going up and down in both directions for miles. The gliders were out. I stayed the night at Kinsman Pond tent site, which had one group, four through hikers and one duo of party dudes. Light rain came Monday morning, resulting in a wet yet peaceful descent down Fishin Jimmy, with a brief respite from the flies. As the rain let up, Lonesome Lake was possibly at the peak of black fly season as I was swarmed on the dock, as well as buzzed the entire trail around the lake. In spite of haze, the view of Franconia was still marvelous. Just can't go wrong in this area because it's so beautiful even when crowded or buggy! |
