2nd hike of the day. From the boat launch, I walked south on Rte 3 about 0.1 mile, wanting to avoid the first ridge and aimed to go almost straight for the peak. Most of the ascent was ferns, hobblebush and mud, but I hit a very steep and rocky area with pencil woods that made for slow going. I also scared off a large snowshoe hare near the summit! Found the canister and decided to take the southern ridge down. In the flattish area at 2860' it was very, very wet, so I got off the ridge quickly and went straight for rte 3, finding more ferns and hobblebush, but fortunately not steep like the ascent. Even half way up the mtn, I could hear the loons calling on the lake! I came out a little further south on rte 3 than where I started. |
