Hubbard Brook Trail is a mess from start to finish. I approached it from the 118 side. Parking on FR 211, the first 0.4 to the trailhead is a walk through tall grass that is full of ticks. Once on the trail proper, things don't get much better. The trail is overgrown (hobblebush, ferns, tall grass) at the very beginning, and it makes following the trail difficult, especially in open sections where there are no blazed trees to rely on. In the middle section of the trail, the trail is more defined. Once I hit the beaver ponds, I was guessing at points where the trail was. As long as I stayed in the area of the ponds, I was able to find the trail.
I cleaned up the blowdowns that I could with a handsaw in the first .5 miles, and will work on the trail again soon (I'm the trail adopter).
I've hiked this trail in the winter and it was a lot easier -- so I would suggest hiking this trail then. It's a shame that it's so overgrown and otherwise in a dismal state, as it could be a very nice woods walk. The beaver ponds are interesting and the area feels more remote than it is. |
