Presicat Loop Day 3. Awoke to the Thursday morning observatory weather forecast being all wrong. Not a cloud in the sky. Was in serious pain from the previous day though, and fully intended to bail out. After hiking the first 1/4-1/2 mile the muscles loosed up, and when I got to Six Husbands, I decided go for it. Six Husbands has to have been the steepest trial and most challenging trail I have ascended in the Whites, but the views are breathtaking. It was very overgrown in spots, and there were several blowdowns. The ladders were a non-issue - secure and easy to ascend. The scrambles were challenging. The trail is very difficult to follow through the giant boulder fields, I got turned around before I realized I had to squeeze through this tiny opening. The scree field is still covered with soft, slippery snow. I didn't carry my spikes, but I don't think they would have helped. Luckily you could skirt around the edge of it. The bugs at the top of Jefferson were swarming. Literally just at the summit cairn. The rest of this trip was uneventful, other than the bugs at each summit. It's almost like they sat there, waiting for hikers to come take a break so the could feast. Finished my 48 on Madison, which was the goal for the trip. Got a nice round of applause from a AMC guided group. Easily the most challenging hike I've ever done - roughly 38.7 miles and 14,866ft of ascent over 3 days as tracked by my watch. |
