Needed to plug a whole in our redline of the Wapack. The trail going down off of Pack Monadnock was ledgy at first, then just rocky. Once in the col the trail ranged from soft pine covered to rocky to rooty. The climb up to North Pack was pretty moderate until the last .1 or so. Came back using the Cliff Trail. This trail was not bad until we passed the cliff view point which was definitely worth it even on this smoke-hazy day. The descent from here was a bit steep and treacherous. Found myself thinking of the terrifying 25! Once at the base of the cliff there was one confusing spot where there was a GIANT cairn to the left. The trail actually turns right here so must be a reroute. The trail back to the Wapack was not too bad although not well-travelled and a bit overgrown in spots. The trip back was a lot better than the trip down although with the tiring descent of Cliff, the hot humid temps and the slightly smoky air contributed to a tough slog back to the car! |
