 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
The last half mile of Paugus Road/Chocorua Mountain Road (leading to the Brook/Liberty Trailhead) is very lumpy and eroded, and it has two unavoidable large pools of water in the middle of road. Fortunately they were shallow enough that one could drive through them; this might change after it rains. We got the last legal parking space at the White Ledge Campground hiker parking (where Carter Ledge Trail starts) at around 10am. There were a few spots still available at the Brook/Liberty Trailhead parking. |

 | Recommended Equipment: |
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Easy rock hopping. |
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
About 3/4 of the way up Carter Ledge Trail, there is a pool of water blocking the trail, deep enough that we had no choice but to bushwhack around it. Brook Trail has one large blowdown. |
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Didn't see any on these trails today. |
 | Bugs: |
Lots of mosquitoes along most of the trail, especially at the lower elevations, and they are aggressive - they even bit me through a new Insect Shield (permethrin-treated) sun sleeve. Not so many bugs in the summit area and along the ridge. |

 | Comments: |
We hiked up Carter Ledge Trail, and down Brook Trail, using a car spot. We met only a few small groups on these trails on this mostly cloudy day. The "terrifying" ledge near the top Carter Ledge Trail was mostly dry, and hence not really so bad. What was much worse was trying to go down the steep slabs on Brook Trail - most of them were wet and slippery enough that for safety we had to bushwhack around them, through the forest. And the lower part of Brook Trail had many difficult-to-avoid muddy sections. And all this will probably only get worse with the forecast rain for the next few days, so I'd recommend avoiding Brook Trail for now. |
