 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Five Summers: This is a snowmobile route, so don't expect a "normal" hiking trail; no major issues but the upper footpath portion needs some brushing. MSG: In generally good shape but could use some minor brushing in spots. Bear Pond: Also a snowmobile route; no major issues. |

 | Comments: |
With the oppressive heat and humidity, this was a good option for today. There are no strenuous sections and nearly the entire route is in the shade of the forest. That didn't stop me from sweating buckets though.
Both Five Summers and Bear Pond are mudfests with areas of standing and running water. Five Summers is also very brushy and grassy the further in you go. I've read previous comments from folks saying they dislike Five Summers but I really enjoyed it. I liked its wild character, beautiful and easy walking, and its remote feeling.
As expected, the MSG was in the best shape. Mostly dry trail but some muddy and wet areas. The SW view from Lucia's Lookout is starting to become obscured by trees but the SE view is still fantastic. I would have sat there for a while if not for the baking sun. The views were very hazy due to the thick air.
No humans sighted but there are a lot of frogs on Five Summers and I spotted one turtle on the same trail. |
