Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Wednesday, July 5, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The large parking lot at the Signal Ridge Trailhead was less than half full Wednesday morning but almost to capacity when I returned to it on Thursday midday.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The stream had extra water due to recent rainfall, requiring most everyone to remove shoes. I wore crocs and used poles to assist my balance as the water had a quick current and was painfully cold. However it was only shin to knee deep and I made it across without any more issue besides shoe change.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trail is in good condition. There are a couple areas that could benefit from a bog board. There are many medium to large rocks which are unpredictably wobbly. Rocks bigger than my foot which looked normally steadfast were sometimes moving. After nearing falling back into a tree off a moving rock, I was much more critical of where to step.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I met four cute dogs who were doing well on this moderate but long trail.
Bugs
Bugs: Mosquitoes were at maximum. My bug spray wasn't strong enough and another hiker kindly gave me some Deet. Some hikers had head nets. No black flies until the summit, where they seemed to hang out waiting for hikers. Also saw some midges in the woods near the summit.

Comments
Comments: With a break in the rainy weather, I enjoyed an overnight stay at the camping area atop Mount Carrigain. What an amazing location it is. Clear skies offered an astounding show of sunset, moon rise, stars all night, and a spectacular sunrise. The trail is long, starting with two miles of pretty easy going walking in the jungle, then building into a never-ending mile of straightaway stair stepping on a moderate yet challenging grade. No sketchy steep stuff. Hours of identical looking steps fade from memory when you finally reach the ridge around 4.5 miles. Then its glory and awe with views galore. Another woodsy tunnel to the summit and the fire tower is a large wide area for many people to sit and rest before trying to name so many summits in 360 views.
