Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We arrived by 7:30, and there were still plenty of spots left. I'm starting to think people are trying to scare us away by saying how crowded things are so early. Still, given the heat, I'm very glad we started just before 8am rather than our usual 10am (or so) hiking start time.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Some of the crossings involved some thought, but all were doable. (And, I'm wimpy when it comes to walking on rocks and logs over streams.) My feet didn't get wet.

Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Someone had a dog up there, and he didn't seem to be loving Old Bridle (it was much hotter descending and facing west)--we hope the dog is ok! (Many seemed to be helping, and they had a dog harness on him already.) Plenty of dogs were hiking that day, and were very agile on all the rocks.
Bugs
Bugs: I have literally 30 bites on my legs where I had on long socks. I applied picaridin at my shoes and on my legs above the sock line--to avoid ticks. I figured I was ok where there was actual sock! I couldn't believe the bites when I changed socks at the hut. I'm thinking short socks and extra bug spray would have been better (if it would have even worked against what was likely flies).

Comments
Comments: Falling Waters is a beautiful trail, and I would like to enjoy it on a day that isn't 96% humidity. That said, it was cool enough in the woods and seeing the waterfalls was worth it. I was picturing dangerous walks on ledges across waterfalls, and was happy to see that the trails were in the woods and not on top of any of the falls. The detour to Shining Rock was worth it. The Franconia Ridge is unbelievable. It was unreal to be up there. Lincoln and Lafayette seemed so far away and so steep! Perhaps they were, but the climbs were gradual enough. Highly recommend the hike. We were grateful for the clear day, with just enough cloud cover to make it a little less hot on the ridge.
