We hiked out to the steep washout located 0.25 miles beyond the Mt Clinton Trail junction, on the Dry River Trail. PackFlag wants to go backpacking with me beyond this point and ever since my second out-and-back of this area last fall I have steadfastly refused to ever take that risk again. We hiked out together to take a look.
There are two washout areas and then a dirt and rock sidehill. We could only see the first (southern) one from our vantage point. The excessive rain has not been kind and the area remains very loose. You can see a newly eroded area about 10’ below the straight line from entry to exit of the section; this erosion further compromises the stability of the area above it. There are not any large/stable boulders to use, it’s all dirt and small stuff. It’s about 20’ to get across this first section. It is a no-fall zone - if you slide it’s at least 80’ down to the river. I hiked Huntington Ravine Trail two days ago and for me personally this section of the Dry River Trail is riskier than anything on Huntington. I remain steadfast in my resolve not to hike the Dry River Trail past this point.
(Note we recently met the trail adopter in person and offered to come to his Silky Saw party for the northern end of this trail; we plan to hike in from the north via Edmands Path and Mt Eisenhower Trail for these shenanigans!!)
