| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parking at Monadnock State Park HQ is $15/vehicle. We reserved parking via https://newhampshirestateparks.reserveamerica.com for an additional $1, but on an iffy weather day like today it was unnecessary. |
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable |
| Recommended Equipment: |
| Water Crossing Notes: |
The only stream crossing on our route was on Cascade Link between the junctions with Harling and Birchtoft Trails, but it was almost completely dry, not even requiring a rock hop - just a rock walk. |
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Trails are in good condition, easy to follow. |
| Dog-Related Notes: |
Pets are not allowed on Mt. Monadnock. |
| Bugs: |
Many mosquitoes in the parking lot and some along the trails, and they were biting. In the summit area instead there were highly localized clouds of flies/gnats (one could move 10 ft. and be out of the bug cloud), but they didn't seem to be biting. |

| Comments: |
We managed to avoid the rain and thunderstorms by starting early. Spellman Trail lived up to its reputation as the steepest trail on the mountain, though only in a few places did one really need to use hands to scramble up it. After reaching the summit via Pumpelly Trail, we went a little beyond it, starting down Smith Summit Trail, turning left slightly off the trail after descending a steep gully, to view Billings Fold, a place of geological interest where rock folding is clearly visible in the middle of the rock face. We then returned to the summit and came down via White Cross Trail. |
