Trails
Trails: Welch-Dickey Loop Trail, herd path
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, August 6, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: There were enough places to park leading up to the main parking lot that we had no trouble, even though we arrived at 10am on a beautiful Sunday.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Easy rock hopping
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: In general, the trail is in excellent shape. One small issue: There is a big cairn at the col between Welch and Dickey Mtns., but heading out from there the trail is not blazed very clearly, and some of the next few blazes just beyond that, starting the ascent to Dickey, have faded to become almost invisible.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Plenty of dogs on this trail.
Bugs
Bugs: A few flies, but not biting.

Comments
Comments: We went the recommended counterclockwise direction so as to go up the steep ledges on the south side of Welch.

Some of the ledges were wet in places, perhaps from the rain two days earlier, but the steepest ones were dry, so no problem with hiking boots or trail runners.

From the summit of Dickey, there is a herd path north along the ridge leading to a large bare ledge (visible from the summit of Dickey) with a beautiful view of Franconia Notch. This path winds a lot and is not marked; if taking it, stay on the rocks so as not to trample the fragile vegetation.
