Tripoli road was it's normal pothole self. I found it particularly difficult to see some of the potholes mixed with shadows from midday sunlight. |

Started from Tripoli road and ascended past the HOL on East Pond Trail to the sharp turn others describe. Whacked up from here, trying to follow the drainage aiming for just north of the col between Scar East and Scar SE . Steep but decent woods for awhile. Around 3300 got real dense and didn't relent until after the summit - this stretch was pretty painful. I think the situation I detest most is knowing I'm near a recognized high point, but it being too dense to read the terrain and tell which direction is actually higher - which was the case up here. Found the high point in a small clearing in the north east area of the summit contour. I think if I were doing this again I would try whacking up the drainage SW of the summit from the connector between the ponds.
West of the summit opened up pretty nicely and made up some time. I tried to weave between the bumps on the ridge which worked well for the first bump, staying to the NE, but was less fun on the SW side of the 2nd bump. Got pretty dense again near the western-most col just before the Middle summit. Ascending Middle was steep and bouldery, but much easier than the stuff around SE. Descended back to the col then whacked south towards Little East Pond. These woods were pretty good as well. Found what seemed like maybe an overgrown old road, that provided good footing and followed it SSE, passing the pond on the eastern side until I hit the connector trail. Followed the trail west to the pond then back to the trailhead. |
