Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Baldface Circle Trail crosses Charles Brook just above Emerald Pool. Since it rained Thursday night, the water was relatively high. I tried to hop on dry rocks, but failed to keep my feet dry. Crocs might be useful here.

Comments
Comments: Running water on trail in many areas, but that's par for the course this year.

I did the clockwise loop recommended in the 52 with a view guide. I also used Meader Ridge Trail to tag Eagle Crag and then backtracked to descend via Bicknell Ridge (for the views).

This is a challenging hike in the best of conditions, but rain overnight made it slightly more so. As I was clinging on to one of the wet ledges below South Baldface, I wondered how my 52-with-a-view hike had turned into a terrifying-25 ordeal. (Hint: South Baldface is on the Terrifying 25 list too.) Also, the water in Charles Brook was relatively high, making the two crossings on this route a bit sketchy.

In other words, you might want to adjust your route depending on conditions. For example, Slippery Brook Trail is supposedly a good detour around the ledges. But this is a MAGNIFICENT hike. Great views from the ledges, from South and North Baldface, and from Eagle Crag.
