Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Wow! The initial river crossing was tricky, but do-able. Wide river and rushing water. I can see why many people are parking at Pinkham Notch and not at the Glen Ellis lot. But that adds a mile of hiking.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There are a couple of trees down probably between Wildcat B and A, maybe C and A that are causing people to tramp all through the brush to go around. It's messy and would benefit from a clean up.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: We saw a few, and the trail was fine for athletic dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: None. Yay!

Comments
Comments: The day starts with a tricky and exciting river crossing. Once over that you start two miles of up, up and up. Some through hikers told us that after the river is the hardest mile of the whole Appalachian Trail! Although it is steep with a lot of elevation in a short period, very little of it is difficult. It's stair climbing and boulder hopping. Fun stuff. There are a couple of spots where wooden blocks have been hooked to the rocks to assist you. Nice views start almost immediately. Once to the top of Wildcat D you have lovely views down both sides of the mountain. Shortly after D there is a viewing platform. The trail undulates over C and B and then has a small but quite scenic viewing area off of Wildcat A. From A there is a sharp decent to 19 mile brook trail. The trail out from here is relatively flat, but feels like 19 miles (it's 3.6m). Very pretty brook with lots of waterfalls for the last mile or so. Truly, if you're fit at all, the river crossing was the hardest part.
