Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Most stream and river crossings manageable rock hopping. At the head of the canyon on flat mountain pond trail heading north from Bennett street there is a 20' stretch we forded with water shoes given it is old rail bed. Knee deep and cold but firm footing. Unclear if it could have been circumnavigated
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One or two minor blow downs near the pond. One washout on Bennett Street near juncture with Flat Mountain Pond trail making route finding a challenge. Two washouts west of flat mountain along the whiteface river probably two miles down trail headed south and east from the shelter. Still passable--one makes route finding a bit of a challenge, but there is only one way the trail could go; the other is significant and isn't a problem yet but might be.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: None on trail.
Bugs
Bugs: Moderate here and there, but notably absent at the flat mountain pond shelter. Lots of leeches in flat mountain pond; rethink that swim! We picked up a few wading to cool off tired legs but spotted them before they attached.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: Great overnight loop to the flat mountain pond shelter. The only ones there for the evening. Saw some Forest Service Employees on the hike out today, headed in to do some tree census work near the pond. Super friendly folks. No one else on the trail. Road hike to complete the loop wasn't much fun, but otherwise, a great hike and camp even with some rain on either side of the overnight. Composting toilet at the lake was an unexpected but pleasant surprise. Don't know how much use the shelter and surrounding sites get, but it was a really great trip.
