Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: oh boy-this poor trail. I have read countless reports of the erosion on the lower half but was still flabbergasted at the extent of the unmitigated erosion. The trench was taller than me in spots. There are several massive boulders that are being held up by nothing and look ready to let rip down the trail at any moment. I hope when they release no one is on trail. I've hiked 99% of the guidebook and there is nothing that even comes close to the miserable state of this section. It wasn't horrific to hike but looks like one good storm away from being completely obliterated. I hiked this seven years ago at beginiing of my hiking adventures and didn't remember any of this section. Above the lookout, there are crazy mud pits with ridiculous muddy herd paths destroying the woods extensively on both sides of the trail. Some bog bridges or rock steps are badly needed-this is the worst example of mud/herd paths I have also seen in the Whites. This trail is a hot mess. That being said, Margaret and I loved hiking it-extremely rugged, beautiful, and challenging-but it is getting hiked to death.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: trail is extremely rough in the middle section and would only recommend for seasoned mountain dogs. Mine is way too old for this trail
Bugs
Bugs: a few skeeters

Comments
Comments: Fun afternoon hitting 4K #20 for Ms. Margaret. As noted above, this trail is beat to hell. It was incredibly wet top to bottom-tons of running water down the trail and rocks were slick as snot. Made for fun scrambling! Awesome views from ski glades and the entire summit cone area near the top. As expected it was a zoo once we hit the loop up high-tourists galore. The deck was mobbed with people taking selfies and family photos so we ate a few cookies and scurried back down the trail to enjoy the extensive views by ourselves. We both really enjoyed this hike. Views were great of Franconia notch but the wildfire haze moved back in pretty hard today and everything beyond was obscured or non-existent.
