Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The two on the lower part of the Carter Dome Trail were easy rock hops. Others are bridged.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails are in fairly decent shape. There is some mud here and there, much of it firmed up enough for walking across quickly. In some cases, rocks or logs/branches are just at or below the mud surface and can be felt with the poles. Good, waterproof footware is a definite must-have.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw a couple enjoying (I think) the outing.
Bugs
Bugs: Mostly too cool for them in the morning, too breezy up top. Did not apply bug juice, still encountered none until late afternoon, and only that one.

Comments
Comments: Beautiful day for hiking, with long views. Unrelated to hiking, we had just returned to the cars at the 19MB trailhead when we heard the loud WHOOMP of a vehicle crashing into something just a couple hundred feet south of the parking lot. This turned out to be a large northbound SUV that had gone off the road into the end of a guard rail, ripping out a good 20 ft of that rail and folding it back into loops. The front end of the vehicle was totally destroyed, air bags deployed, and there were bits of plastic things all over route 16. I called it into 911, as did someone else, I learned. Apparently there were no significant injuries. Keep your eyes open for traffic while by the roads up there.
