Comments
Comments: We backpacked this route on Aug 26 - 27.
On Aug 26 we hiked Pond Brook Falls and Trio Trail. These trails have fabulous footing, are well marked and serene. There is a water crossing on Pond Brook that has a terrific and easy to navigate log bridge.
We stayed at the Percy tentsite. The tentsite has one big tentpad and some space next to it for tents. Note that the tent pad pools water (reported to the trail adopter) but other than that we had no issues. We fit four tents no problem (two on the pad, two next to it). Water is right next to the tentsite (and the brook is peaceful to listen to while falling asleep!) so no need to haul any. There are some reports that there is a shelter in this location but there is no shelter. There is a privy and a bear box and both are in great shape. This is a great spot for camping.
We hiked up to North Percy for a spectacular sunset. Would highly recommend!
On August 27 some of our group hiked up to South Percy for the Hiking the WMG project while one of us did a little trailwork (by prior agreement!). We continued down Old Summer Club and stopped off at Victor Head. Old Summer Club above Victor Head is fabulous walking through beautiful, moss covered forest with minor scrambling. This trail section is great.
We dropped our packs to hike up to Victor Head because it’s a steep but beautiful climb. The trail is in great shape. Since the last time that I was up there a new part has been added with a stand up view to the Percys. The best part, however, remains the ledge view over Christine Lake looking south - the last time that I hiked this I saw why they call it “The Horn!”
Old Summer Club below Victor Head is really depressing to me because it has been significant logged out. I hiked this trail at peak fall colors in 2020 and the yellow and red canopy of trees was absolutely spectacular. That is no longer possible. Possibly due to the logging this section had miserable mosquitoes.
The Devil’s Rest shelter is easily accessible and the shelter itself looks brand new! The privy is in great shape. Water is not close by - it’s about 0.2 miles south of the shelter and 0.5 miles north of the shelter, so if you are headed there, bring some in with you.
In all this was a fabulous backpacking route. Would highly recommend!!
