Comments
Comments: The Jewell Trail begins across Base Road from the WMNF parking lot.
The most mud is in the section from the Jewell trailhead to the Clay Brook crossing. Above the Clay Brook crossing there are only sporadic mud spots. Nothing extreme.
Above the tree line on the Jewell Trail, it is important to be watchful for the cairns to stay on the trail. There are off-trail paths in this section of trail.
The footing is secure and the grades moderate on the Jewell Trail. The Cog RR is noisy in the lowest section of the Jewell Trail.
The old yellow blazes can be seen on both the Jewell Trail and the Gulfside Trail as well as the blue and white blazes that are compliant with the AT standards. Regardless, the trails are easy to follow.
Lots of hikers out today including AT thru hikers, Presidential traverse hikers, and day hikers with various itineraries. Met one couple from France near the Swiss border.
