Comments
Comments: Getting Magalloway completed towards our fire tower quest patch. Magalloway road off Rte 3 is pretty smooth dirt, very drivable. Tower road, also dirt, is now open, after being swamped by beavers a few weeks back. This lets you drive tower road to the trailhead. It had rained the day before, and through the night so there was a fair amount of water everywhere. We had a Jeep, used 4 wheel drive on the way in/up but probably didn’t need it. Didn’t use 4x4 on the way out/down. It’s doable by SUV but a car might struggle in spots. It was not muddy, but full of puddles and rocks/boulders. Somewhat rough but not hard core. About3 miles of that to the trailhead. We went up Bobcat and down coot. Both through forest. Bobcat was very wet and muddy, in between small rocks and roots. Somewhat overgrown with ferns and such which kept our pants/shorts wet. Generally steady vertical but does vary some. Just under a mile. Intersects Coot near the top and then goes to the summit. Moose tracks in the mud right at the start of the trail but we never saw the moose. Coot is a wider steadier incline trail with semi-loose scree and stone. Mostly dry or just damp from the rain, not the mud of Bobcat. Also about a mile. Weather all cleared once we got up top. One of the best views around, and one of the best for a tower on the active list. At the summit, make sure to also hike down the short overlook path to view a stunning cliff face and rock slide.
