Bridged or easily rock hop-able. Plenty of water everywhere today. Woods Beams across Pond Brook are excellent and well above the brook running pretty high. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Trails are well blazed and brushed. Everything is wet. We got to walk on the new puncheons/bog bridges in Gadwad Notch which were only a couple days old! Thank you trail volunteers. Still everywhere was wet so even between them we gave up trying to keep our feet dry. Nash Bog Spur has too many blowdowns. Trio Trail is trimmed like a golf course--someone is giving this trail major love! |

Day 2/3, 17 miles. We were on the trail by 7 am. The moon sure did shine bright last night and a good night in the shelter for Julie and me. Baldhead Lean-to is the quietest place on Earth, not a sound all night. We were able to filter water after a quick ten minute walk downhill from camp. Gadwah Notch is a lovely forest and we both agreed this place sure tops anything we have designated as Wilderness. We had nice obstructed views of the surrounding mountains. Filtered water at Pike Brook bridge before heading down the East Side Trail, more moose poop here. I attempted to take spur to Nash Bog for a better view of the nearby peaks but it was a blowdown nightmare before reaching the Bog and the ground was muddy and wet so I retreated before reaching it. And we didn't quite understand the Devil's Jacuzzi, we took spur down to the river and could see the pool and ledge but there was so much water it all looked cool. We were hoping for a cleared beach to sit and rest but the bank of the river is quite grown in and no sun. Julie and I have hiked Sugarloaf before so we didn't go this time. We reached the Old Hermit Shelter by noon and we took a good break there--excellent water here. Pond Brook Falls are loud and ledgy and beautiful well worth the spur effort. The Trio Trail is a joyful trail well groomed and some nice stone steeps and took us all the way to the tent site. We filtered and filled our water bottles at the Long Mt. Brook ten minutes or so before reaching camp. Two Nobos were already set up on the platform in the middle of the trail and a spot just above it. We elected to set up our tents on the only other clear flat spot --the middle of the trail just north of the bear box. I should have mentioned that Baldhead and Old Hermit have nice bear boxes too! There is a good water source at the tent site so we didn't need to carry the water. It rained hard most the night but thankfully stopped by morning. |
