Stunningly beautiful day to be out and about. High about 80, with low humidity and a cool breeze. Shannon Pond Trail is still closed off, so don't bother trying to walk around it. The trails were in great shape, but there is still lots of mud on some of them. Didn't realize that there is a pond/bog/marshy area up near the High Ridge Trail. That was a nice surprise. With all the rain we've been having, the mushrooms are out in abundance and there are some beauties to find, like Bear's Head Tooth and Yellow-tipped Coral Fungus. The view from Shaw was exceptional and with binoculars you could see the observatory on Washington. I'm glad a fellow hiker suggested taking a quick side trip out to Black Snout to get views of the lake. Met a volunteer doing trail maintenance and I commented on how amazing the trails were. I do wish that there were signs that said To Hiker Kiosk Parking Area or something like that. Some of the cut-offs can be confusing, esp. with unmarked side trails. |
