Recommended Equipment

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Easy rock hops but Margaret wanted to “bushwhack” and I was curious about the bypasses so we checked them out on the way up. The first bypass is clearly used much more frequently and is a well-established herd path. The second bypass feels more like an easy bushwhack.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A few small blowdowns. One big walk under in first mile will be annoying crawl-under come winter. Seems like it would be easy to chainsaw the top 10-feet off of it and eliminate it altogether
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Lots of friendly dogs today. Lots of running water all the way up currently so no need for extra. Easy grades except last .2 where there is some steep, rough scrambling. Easy hike for most hiking dogs. Fin’s 3rd time on Garfield but first since 2016!

Comments
Comments: Conditions were too perfect to not hike something cool so I committed to the suffering and lugged the boy up Garfield for Margaret’s 48 list. He did hike about 2.5 miles so that was nice. There were some avoidable mud pits down low but nothing crazy. Some running water up high was nice for the pup. Saw tiny bit of orange foliage down below Owl’s Head but mostly green still. Fighter jets were roaring WAY overhead at summit-fun for James. Nice crisp, cool day with no wind and bountiful sunshine at summit. Thanks to the ladies who took our photo and helped lower the boy off the fire tower ledge so I didn’t have to do a very awkward butt-scoot! First day of Autumn did not disappoint!!!
