| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Upper section of Ice Gulch is poorly blazed and slightly overrun. We feared we had lost the trail several times. Blazes start out strong on lower Gulch then fade away. Scrambles become more intense. And trail is slightly overrun. Feared we we had gotten off track but GAIA assured us we were where we were supposed to be. The toilet paper we found under a boulder was also a good hint were on track!
Lower section of Cook's Path had signs saying closed due to logging. We continued and managed to find our way back to the road. Cant say this will continue to be the case if logging continues. |

Ice Gulch Path starts out gentle and easy. Loop to Peboamauk Falls totally worth it. Steep descent and ascent but gorgeous. The other side of the loop is easier if you'd rather avoid the falls but we thought it was well worth the effort. The ice gulch itself is insane. Definitely an advantage to be tall. The shorter members of our group were struggling and needed numerous boosts. Not a very long stretch <1 mile but took us 2 hrs if not more to complete that section. Required being on all fours a lot of the time. Used all parts of the body to find ways up and around boulders. Care not to fall into deep pockets in between boulders. Lots of slips due to wet rock.
Cook's Path after Ice Gulch starts with ascent then flat then gentle descent. Cake walk compared to the Ice Gulch. |
