Date of Hike: Tuesday, September 26, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Room for a few cars at the Shelburne trailhead on Wild River Road, about 5 miles in from Route 113. I was the only car there. Wild River Road is in good condition.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossings of Wild River and the two branches of Bull Brook on Shelburne Trail between Wild River Road and Highwater Trail are much the same as on my report of Highwater Trail two days ago: https://www.newenglandtrailconditions.com/nh/viewreport.php?entryid=68392. Above that point on Shelburne Trail, there's a crossing of a branch of Bull Brook just before entering the Wilderness - that crossing can be rock-hopped, and I used rocks on the left (downstream) side of the crossing. There's another easy crossing near the upper end of the logging road section of trail.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Lots of blowdowns, both inside and outside the Wilderness. Some muddy areas, mostly on the logging road section. Signs are all in place, but there are no cairns visible on either side of the Wild River crossing.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: They'd need to be carried across Wild River. Besides the water crossings, though, no issues.
Bugs
Bugs: None.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing.

Comments
Comments: Finished redlining Shelburne Trail today. Above the crossing of Highwater Trail (the section between Highwater and the road is covered in the report I mentioned above), the trail starts out gradual and has good footing except for a significant number of blowdowns. The logging road section above that is gradual to moderate, and generally good footing except for some wet and muddy spots. The upper section is generally moderate with a few short, steep pitches. A beginner might need a little bit of help following the upper portion of trail, but an experienced hiker won't have any issues. Footing on the upper part is somewhat rougher but really not bad for anyone used to rocky, rooty White Mountain trails.

This was a fairly quick hike, without much drama. Weather was excellent, and I didn't see any other hikers.
