| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Pine Bend needs level 1 maintenance.
The first two miles - trailhead to the wilderness boundary:
The drainages are many, and are full and not only need to be cleared, but a lot of them need to be recontoured. If the drainages were working properly there would be a whole lot less unavoidable mud. People are going around the mud and the trail is being widened in many places.
There is one large, new duck under blowdown about 0.3 miles from the trailhead. It has been roughly delimbed (it looks like that was painful for someone). It’s hard to get under now and will be a royal pain with snow. It’s hard to get around it because of the brook. It’s a 24”+ diameter tree. Possibly it could be #zippified, possibly it will need a chainsaw.
The hobble bush and little birches are reclaiming this trail. It needs brushing all along the route. Assuming this doesn’t happen this fall, I would recommend a waterproof layer if you are hiking this during or after rain or snow.
Wilderness boundary and up:
The trail is eroding. Seriously. In long stretches it’s starting to look like the KRT between Cannon and the ski parking lot. Not good. There are lots and lots of blowdowns, but it’s the wilderness, so they will remain. There is, however, one that is hung up a precarious 3’ above the trail. It’s just above the Scaur junction. There are herd paths around it on both sides, which are good, since you really, really don’t want to go under this thing. It’s also a 24”+ diameter monster. Maybe it will fall soon, and not harm any animals or humans. Let’s hope.
Brushing is very much needed from the flat area before the Scaur junction to the final climb.
I work really hard on my adopted trail, and on trails for the Chatham Trails Association, so it’s hard to see a trail like this and not be sad. |

| Comments: |
I hiked Pine Bend out and back for the Grid and for HikeOctober (Hike for Mental Health). I was on the trail early so didn’t start seeing people until I was descending. See Trail Maintenance section for issues. |
