| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
We arrived via the Tripoli Road exit 31 off I-93. For grins we departed by taking a Left out of the parking lot onto Tripoli Road in the other direction, toward Waterville Valley. The man-eating potholes made it much slower; would not repeat that direction.
Also note a WMNF ranger was checking for dashboard parking receipts when we arrived at 10:30 am. |

Settled for just Osceola today and did not trek to East as hoped given the usual family late start and my slightly under the weather-ness. Despite the wildfire haze, you couldn't possibly beat the weather - 70 degrees and shorts/T-shirts on Oct. 1. And the stunning summit views.
Dozens of fellow hikers with cars lining Tripoli Rd. before/after the trailhead -most of them patient as everyone passed/waited their turn for others of different paces.
In a random survey of late morning descenders, more than half also trekked to East, reporting mostly that the Chimney, while tricky, is eminently doable. Drat. The mountain will be there another day though.
One of these days I'll have to dig into why the trail signs say this is a 3.2 mi trek to the summit when the WMG says 2.9 miles. I presume there was a reroute; i swear when we first did this about 20 years ago it was marked/listed as 3.2 mi. one way. |
