| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
All of these trails have scattered blowdowns of various ages, types, and sizes. A large tree has fallen right at the summit of Daniels, almost taking out the trail signs. The first half mile of Bear Mountain Trail on private land is very overgrown and the start of the trail in a brushy clearing took me a minute to find. Once the trail enters state land it's fine. Daniels Mountain Trail doesn't look like it's seen any attention in quite a while. Lots of blowdowns and storm debris. While decently blazed, the trail corridor takes some care to follow due to light use, especially with some leaf cover down now. |

Some trail checking in the Hinsdale area today. The main goal was to rewalk what is currently known as Bear Mtn. Connector. On 10/21/2023 this trail will be renamed Tom Duston Trail in honor of Tom Duston, long-time visionary of land conservation and trail building in this region.
Aside from the first half mile of Bear Mountain Trail, which was wet in addition to being overgrown, everything else here was dry. As luck would have it I met two members of the Chesterfield Conservation Commission later in the hike. They tend to the trails here. I let them know about the conditions on Bear Mountain Trail and we all agreed that one person with a weed whacker could make quick work of opening the corridor back up.
Nice views from Moon Ledge and another smaller ledge along Daniels Mountain Loop. Otherwise this hike is completely in the woods.
Not too much foliage color in this neighborhood yet but it's coming along. What happened to that nice cool autumn air? |
