Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Arrived at Ferncroft at 7:15am and grabbed one of the last remaining pull-in spots available. Turns out there was an AMC hike starting at 7:30. On return at 1:30pm, the lot was overflowing and only one open spot.
Surface Conditions

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Only one on Dicey’s Mill and the logs across worked just fine.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: These trails are in amazing shape. One easy duck under on Dicey’s Mill about 3 miles up and incredibly, nearly 100% clear sailing along both Walden and Wonalancet Range Trails. Kudos to the trail maintainers. The intersection of Square Ledge and Walden has multiple significant blowdowns blocking the Square Ledge Trail.

Comments
Comments: Was planning on including Whiteface via Tom Wiggin, but based on the MWO and MW forecasts of possible icing and wind chills in the 20’s, and seeing Whiteface in a cloak of fog at the start, I decided to skip the ledges and head straight up DMT to Passaconaway, even though I had packed spikes. Ended up meeting a trail runner on the last pitch up Passaconoway who said he’d come that way and only the last ledge was a bit sketchy due to moisture, no icing at all.

Only met one other hiker the entire day and she was working on her 16th and 17th of the 48, tackling the loop counter-clockwise. I hope she made it safely down the ledges.

Walden is quite steep and wet in spots, but easily navigated (glad I was going down). Wonalancet Hedgehog viewpoint was spectacular, as was the old 52 WAV Hibbard lookout. Perhaps the best view of the day was from the one ledgy area descending from Mt Wonalancet of Paugus and Chocorua. Trails are all in great shape.
