Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Rogers Ledge, Devil's Hopyard, NH
Trails
Trails: Kilkenny Ridge Trail, Devil's Hopyard Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, October 8, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The gate just the beyond the fork on South Pond Rd. was open when we arrived at around 8am, so we could park at South Pond Recreation Area (instead of having to walk an extra 1.1 mi along the road each way), even though the White Mountain Guide says that it is locked from 8pm-10am during the summer/fall and locked at all times during the rest of the year. Apparently you can call the WMNF at 603-466-2713 for more details.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Significant, Leaves - Significant/Slippery

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: It had rained the previous day, and there were still light showers. I suppose that this made Cold Stream fuller than usual; we could not cross it easily where the trail crossed, but we found a way across a little upstream. The other smaller stream crossings were easy. The two-log bridge on Devil's Hopyard Trail was in good condition.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The sign at the start of Devil's Hopyard Trail says "Devil's Hopyard Trail Devil's Hopyard 0.3 mi", which is misleading since it is 0.6 mi one-way to the end of the trail, according to the White Mountain Guide. Perhaps the sign intends to say that it is 0.3 mi to where the scrambling begins, but that's not a very well-defined destination. It would be better for the sign to say "Devil's Hopyard Trail 0.6 mi to end" since that is what most people going this way would want to know.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: It might be tricky to get a dog through Devil's Hopyard to the end, but the rest should be fine.
Bugs
Bugs: None.

Comments
Comments: The most colorful leaves were the ones on the ground (bright yellows, reds, burgundy, purple, ...) - maybe Friday's rain knocked a lot of them off the trees, making it arguably "past peak foliage" in this part of NH. Some parts of Kilkenny Ridge Trail were quite muddy, so you have to be careful where you step.
