Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Reaching the trailhead from the northwest (from Rt. 3) requires 8 miles of driving on dirt roads, one way. Reaching the trailhead from the southeast (from Rt. 16 near Lincoln Plantation in Maine, if coming from Errol, NH, say) requires 19 miles of driving on dirt roads, one way. Most of those miles are on dirt roads in good condition, making it practical to drive around 25 mph on them. *** BUT the last 3 miles, on Tower Rd., are on a dirt road with 6-inch-high rocks and shallow potholes everywhere, so a high clearance vehicle is recommended. We made it through very slowly with ordinary sedans, but we may have bumped the underside of our cars a few times. And then we had to go 3 miles back out too. *** Moreover, if coming from the southeast, from Rt. 16, there is a short section of Parmachenee Rd. that is has a ridge of dirt along the middle of the road making driving a little difficult there too.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Leaves - Significant/Slippery
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The picnic table near the summit firetower is in poor condition - the bench on one side has broken off at the end, and the bench on the other side is absent altogether, replacing by a narrow wooden beam that is not secured. The firetower felt very sturdy, though at the base it looked as if one of the bolts (the one on the left side) was not screwed on all the way.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: We saw one at the summit, wearing blaze orange stripes (a smart idea at this time of year, with all the hunters around).
Bugs
Bugs: None.

Comments
Comments: I'd like to emphasize again that it is best to have a high clearance vehicle for the last 3 miles to the trailhead, on Tower Rd.

We went up Coot Trail to the summit, took the short out-and-back side trip to the "Overlook", and descended via Bobcat Trail. Foliage was nice, but perhaps slightly past peak now, after the Friday rain knocked some of the leaves off the trees.
