Southeast Land Trust Of New Hampshire is continuing their initiative to conserve and protect land around Merrymeeting Lake, including the mountain summits that ring the lake. The most recent project nearing completion is the Collins Family Forest, which contains the summit of Mt. Molly.
There is now a pretty extensive trail system here with four access points along North Shore Rd. and three along Devils Den Rd. These trails will have names that will be indicated on a forthcoming map. Kiosks are up at two trailheads. Nearly all of these trails follow old woods/logging roads.
Views from the near-summit ledges on Molly are super and one can get a clear look at SELT's other huge project in this area, the 2,600-acre Birch Ridge Community Forest, as well as other peaks surrounding the lake such as Mt. Bet, Mt. Jesse, Mt. Eleanor, Rattlesnake Mtn., and Caverly Mtn.
For such a beautiful fall day, it sure was quiet on the mountain; I only saw one other person all day. |
