|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
While descending Valley Way, before reaching the intersection with Randolph Path we reached a fork where it was not entirely clear which way Valley Way continued. It turns out that Valley Way is the right branch of the fork. The other trail, on the left (to the west of Valley Way), did not appear on any of our maps; it presumably connects to Air Line. It might be good to put a sign at this fork for hikers descending Valley Way. |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
It would be hard to get a dog up Chemin des Dames, and the exposed rocks on the upper part of Air Line would be rough on paws. |
|
| Bugs: |
None. |

| Comments: |
Wet rocks on the short segment of King Ravine Trail between Mossy Fall and Chemin des Dames, and on Chemin des Dames itself, made these more difficult than usual; the worst part was close to the beginning of Chemin des Dames while ascending; higher up, Chemin des Dames was a little drier.
Air Line from the top of Chemin des Dames to the summit had increasing amounts of rime ice: first on the plants on the side of the trail, and then everywhere between the rocks, and then (near the summit) sometimes on the trail itself, though enough of the trail rocks were ice-free to make microspikes unhelpful. Fast-blowing freezing rain on the upper part of Air Line covered our backpacks (and us!) in rime ice, which seemed to be accumulating as we hiked, making the descent harder than the ascent.
Madison Spring Hut is closed for the season. |
