Started the day at Randolph East trailhead and worked by way up Howker ridge trail. Only saw one other person along the entire trail. Trail was surprisingly dry perhaps one of the driest I've seen in the Whites in the past few weeks. Some areas past about mile 2 up to the treeline on Hawker ridge trail were a bit overgrown where you had to push past branches to continue on the trail. Not a problem but more than I'm used to on most 4000 footer trails. Otherwise Howker Ridge provided excellent views above the treeline all the way up to the summit of Madison. On the way down took Airline to Randolph path, it was a nice loop, not much to note on the way down other than heavy leaf accumulation once you got into the deciduous areas seemed to hide a lot of rocks and mud which wasn't always great. |
