Leaves almost fully off trees, thick on trail, watch footing for first half-mile or so. Water standing or flowing on trail in places -- usually rocks or roots to step on and avoid it. Same with mud. Be sure to know trail beforehand -- very few yellow blazes. Well-placed cairns help with 90-degree trail turns, but be prepared with map and/or GPS. I found the latter helpful to find side trail to summit. Look for three bent iron spikes at summit. Great views of Moosilauke. Worth taking Ken MacGray's advice in 52WAV -- after summit, go back to main trail, turn right, and continue about 1/3 mile to ledges with expansive views toward Vermont including Smarts mtn and Mt Cube. Some ice on trail/ledges in morning. |
