Managed to bare boot up and down Caps Ridge Tr. Which is not wise. Definitely bring spikes (which I had with me). Pockets of frozen mud down low. Mostly clear trail up until near the junction with The Link. A decent amount of ice around there. The first and second Caps were tricky with a combo of bare rock and ice on steep stretches. The second Cap had more ice scattered around. Beyond the third Cap, the rest of the hike had about a half inch of snow on the trail. I tried to avoid inclined rocks wherever possible in case ice was hiding underneath. The snow was semi crunchy but still, not to be trusted while bare booting. I had a more difficult time with the cairns. The combination of 80% covered in fragile crusty snow and bare rock acted like camouflage at times when looking up the mountain for them. At least a couple of times, I accidentally wandered off trail. Expect to rely on cairns for navigation over blazes as some of them were covered over by snow. I saw a black bear above the second Cap on the descent (which was a surprise) a d encountered only one other hiker today. |
