Comments
Comments: Beautiful alpenglow on the Presis at dawn, and bright clear blue skies later in the day! Conditions are mostly consistent with the 10/31 report. The ski trails were frozen packed dirt and rocks, with a couple icy sections towards the top that could easily be avoided. I followed the dirt road all the way up, which I think is consistent with what the resort wants us to do but might have gotten off on one or two sections. WRT was a different beast--a thin coating of snow on much of it, with 95% of the water and mud frozen solid. The bad sections were the ledgy scrambles, almost all of which had blue ice from frozen run-off. I was fine as long as I took them slow, sticking to bare rock, and using a strategic butt-slide here and there. I only ran into issues in a couple spots where the snow obscured some hidden ice beneath. I brought spikes and considered putting them on a few times, but ultimately never did--but anyone up there should absolutely have traction. Also, a note for those like me who don't use poles in the summer but do in the winter--I wished I'd had one for an extra point of contact today. Happy shoulder season!
