| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Ethan Pond Trail could use some brushing, lots of little heartache baby spruces growing up too close to edge of trail please don't trim all the limbs cut that one inch diameter baby right out. I will keep on commenting here that the NH Appalachian Trails are an embarrassment, they need so much maintenance. Yes I volunteer and do trailwork but the AMC/Forest Service needs to step up. Stop buying land in Maine and start taking care of what you have already. From end of Zealand Road at start of Zealand Trail they did a couple hundred feet of rock work a long time ago. Only two more miles left to the hut. |

Becca and I decided another visit to Whitewall would be fun. Zealand Trail to A-Z and then South through the Birch Forest and leaf-less Hobblebush we moved right along. I would be difficult this way would be if the Hobblebush still had leaves! Not a stroll but it was possible to not get tangled up in the pretty woods. The leaves are gone and it is stick season. Gosh so sad how little moose sign we saw this day, old herd paths growing in and no new moose poop. Nothing like the last time I was here. We pretty much made a straight line right to the summit. Canister is good a fun to look back for our and friend's signatures. We wandered around on the nearby ledges a while. Nice wide views to enjoy. We worked our way to the south end of the summit ridge where is a large open ledge area complete with fire ring. The gunsight view of Mount Paugus through Carrigain Notch (between Mt Lowell and Vose Spur) was fabulous, along with all the other nearby peaks. Light wind and high dark clouds made for a long pleasant lunch time here. We then cut East and then snaked around West and down first through steep woods, bypassing some big rocks now and then but we did enjoy mostly open woods. We traveled through some nice glades, pleasant descent really. We hit the Ethan Pond Trail about half way between Thoreau falls and Zeacliff Trails. Nice straight walk back to the car. For a really nice report with good photos visit !HappyHiker's report: https://1happyhiker.blogspot.com/2012/07/a-traverse-of-whitewall-mountain.html |
