The Ravine is in between fall and winter conditions, leaning heavily toward fall at the present moment. I went loaded for bear, should've brought a squirrel gun. Talked myself into bringing a full winter kit less snowshoes, ended up barebooting almost halfway up the headwall before there was enough snow and ice for microspikes (rock spikes!) to make sense. Which is not to say you don't have to watch your step further down; there's plenty of ice glazed rock to lose your footing on if you choose poorly. Also wish I'd left the clunky boots in the car in favor of more grippy trail runners but oh well. Day+ old footprints ahead of might have been bareboot only, hard to tell from the freeze/thaw, but the rock spikes will get you up with less potential for drama. |
