Comments
Comments: A banner day on Carrigain...feel bad for those who did it yesterday and were socked in. My 4th time up and all 4 have been clear (not by accident...it's worth it to save this one for a clear day). No wind at the top and moderate temps made the summit tower a pleasant place to be today. Always fun to play the "How many other 4k peaks can you name?" from the 360 degree view summit...The first/last 2.5 miles were leaves with a few easily avoidable spots of ice and what should have been easily avoidable mud that was not nearly as frozen as it looked and was shin deep...About .5 miles past the crossing the consistent snow cover begins. For the most part, the snow wasn't slick and spikes weren't needed, but there were a few sections with significant ice where sharp spikes would have been a plus. I had not very sharp rock spikes with me and kept them in the bag until the descent where I was glad to have them. If I had the choice over, I'd have put them on at the 3 mile mark of the ascent. There is enough packed snow from the 3 mile mark on that I wish I'd had my sharp spikes with me. Trail is in great shape with only a few minor step overs.
