Trails
Trails: Signal Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, November 12, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: SAWYER RIVER ROAD is open, bare ground and dry the whole 2 miles! So grateful not to have to do that extra 4 miles roundtrip from Route 302 :-) at 6:30 there was only one other vehicle in the lot (sever upon return in the afternoon- but still NOT completely full). The lot itself is pretty bare/dry ground with a few icy spots on the perimeter of the lot itself.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Ice - Black, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Ice - Blue, Wet/Slippery Rock, Ice - Breakable Crust, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The minor streams were of course easy "walk overs," and the main crossing of CARRIGAIN BROOK was with care- exposed rocks had some small dry/wet exposed tops but without that fabulous- slightly moving - slender log, we would have found it a little challenging. But, we stayed dry and used trekking pole for successful crossing :-) *NOTE ABOUT THE MUD: it was all FROZEN save for the first 1/2 mile from the trailhead- and those spots not frozen had plenty of rocks to hop around the mud (thank you!)
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There are 2 downed trees- neither of which appeared to new at all and VERY easy "walk over." There are 4 leaning trees (blow overs- not quite DOWN yet ;-) ) in total BUT all 4 are quite high up and we bet that most wouldn't notice them except for maybe the one larger leaning over tree below the summit (again- it's HIGH up and no need to even duck under at this point). Yellow Blazes were very few; however, the trail is quite obvious- but could see how some people who don't frequently hike / have experience could go astray on some of the herd paths in the first 1.3 miles from the trailhead ;-)
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: We saw 5 dogs out enjoying the trail today :-) Such a nice moderate trail with lots of switchbacks making it never too steep at all.
Bugs
Bugs: Hallelujah! HAHA
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: we found the lost DOGGY BOOT :-) on our way out and Tuckerman The Dog had just past us... so happy to reunite the booty with Tuckerman who SNIFFED AT IT and probably thought " OH MAN I TRIED TO KICK THAT THING OFF! " hahahaha

Comments
Comments: This is a family favorite! Such a gorgeous RIDGE! It was nice to be back... and this time during a snow-packed WONDERLAND!
