Bare ground to start this hike for almost the first two miles, however this section is loaded with mud as the AT has been this year. Huge patches of mud, some difficult to get around and some are deep boot sinkers. No freezing going on at this point with the mud, still very wet and deceiving. About 2.5 miles in and around where the switchbacks start is where the ice and snow started lightly covering the trail, and the muddy spots were beginning to freeze here. Some thick ice and black ice on the stone steps that could require spikes on the way up. Bare booted my way up but put spikes on for the descent for a little over a mile down for extra peace of mind. This trail is wet in many spots and will become very icy soon I imagine. A beautiful sunset hike! Views from both the summit and the North Cube Spur trail (which is really worth the short easy walk over) |
