Just a dusting of snow at the Ethan Pond trailhead and maybe three inches, at most, near the shelter. Steep to start then flat-ish for the remainder of Ethan Pond trail to the shelter and then to the junction with the Shoal Pond trail. Turned around here then came down via Kedron Flume and Westside trails. I used Hillsound spikes/crampons for most of the hike because even though the snow cover was thin, it was slippery. I’d read that most people don’t like the Westside trail. I didn’t get it until about 2/3 of the way in - when it suddenly goes up and away from the road to approach the railroad tracks for no apparent reason. It was the steepest section of the entire 10+ mile day! Even so, an easy, in-the-woods day to grab some new miles. The Ethan Pond shelter was quiet and it looked like the pond is starting to freeze over. |
