Car camped on Tripoli Road to get an early start and catch sunrise on Osceola's east facing views. Started about 5:15 and made it to the summit right at 6:40 which was sunrise time. Unfortunately the summit was boxed in, despite it looking like there was not a cloud in the sky at the trailhead. However, right when I was about to head to the east peak, the clouds broke for just a few minutes allowing some beautiful golden hour views & photos.
Bring your rock spikes, if you have them. I wasn't ready to destroy my microspikes and demote them to rock spikes yet. Probably took them on and off over a dozen times. Down low, there are spots where there is running water next to black ice. Tricky to tell which is which. Tread carefully. My spikes first went on at about 3,800'. Often going on for 50' or so, then coming off. Descended around the chimney, not even realizing it until I made it to the bottom. This was wise anyway. There is some icing on the chimney, but not terrible. I wouldn't want to go down it. The alternate had no ice. I ascended it on the way back, which was probably ill advised being that I was solo. Some of the hand holds are iced over, making it quite tricky. No snow in the Sandwich Range yet, despite the numerous report of a few inches elsewhere in the Whites. Finished about 10:30am. |
