Skookumchuck was a lovely ascent through the woods. Light flurries and a light dusting of snow made for a picturesque hike, despite the lack of sun. We barebooted until .5 from Garfield Ridge Trail. Spikes went on then and stayed on until a mile from the bottom of Greenleaf. We layered up just before we broke out above treeline. The trek across Garfield Ridge to Lafayette was challenging, with limited visibility and brisk winds. There is just enough snow to cover potential icy sections but spikes were sufficient. No lingering at the summit today! As we started the descent toward the hut, the clouds in the valley slowly started lifting. Halfway to the hut, it was finally visible. After being socked in along the ridge and summit, the views of Cannon, Lonesome Lake, Shining Rock were most welcomed. The lower section of Greenleaf from the hut down to the trailhead has lots of "soft" ice floes in the trail for about a mile. We need a good snowstorm for the mountains! A fun, adventurous day with Sarah,Michael, and Renee. |
