Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, November 21, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Just missed Haystack road being open by one day, boo - parked at Seven Dwarfes and left $10 in an envelope on the windshield - most appreciative to the owners for being hiker friendly.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Black, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Ice - Blue, Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Little River easily rock hoppable with spikes at a spot about 100 feet downstream from where the actual trail crosses the river - plenty of signs of use on the banks on both sides here so seems like other people have crossed here before. All other smaller crossings easy or frozen.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Finally got to check out the “new” section of lower North Twin trail - we didn’t have any issues following this but blazes are sporadic in a few areas. Hikers less familiar with this area might have a harder time following the true trail because of some of the older herd paths the cross cross. North Twin trail approaching the summit and North Twin spur approaching South Twin summit could really use a haircut - branches across the trail are touching in multiple locations. The steep upper part of North Twin trail still has nasty eroded sections but at least the ice and snow are starting to slowly fill these in. No other issues noted.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Maddie had a great day - she handled the river crossing with ease and loves hiking in the snow. No specific hazards for winter hardy canines.

Comments
Comments: Out and back of the Twins today - barebooted from the car to North Twin trailhead, rock spikes on here, wore them until back at the same spot on the way out. An inch of snow with a few areas of flow ice before the big river crossing but we were all around faster with spikes. Snow increased to about 4” at most between the peaks but provided good grip in most places. There were a few stretches of nasty flow ice on the steeper sections up high on North Twin trail but maneuverable with care and rock spikes that aren’t super dull. These conditions will of course change with the storm tonight but sharper spikes would be recommended if hiking these peaks this weekend as the flow ice could be treacherous in steeper areas where the snow may get scraped off - much more snow needed for snowshoes but hopefully we’ll be there soon. Moody but long ranging views today - bit chillier than expected but only saw two other people all day. Great day out with Ali and Maddie and congrats to Ali on 47/48 for November.
