I'm not sure of the current policy concerning hikers on the ski slopes.
[NOTE: THIS IS AVAILABLE ON WILDCAT'S SNOW & WEATHER REPORT PAGE - CURRENTLY CLOSED TO UPHILL TRAFFIC]
Last year the Wildcat Resort website had a statement that said hikers were only allowed outside of operating hours. This year I was unable to find a statement either way, and they now have signs at ski trail junctions directing uphill travel. So it seems like the previous policy has been reversed. The ski resort had started grooming those trails that are designated for uphill travel, but they were not open to skiers, so no risk of a collision. As a result of the grooming the ski slopes were mostly packed powder that offered great traction and fast travel.
Snow on the Wildcat Ridge Trail was a mix of packed and loose powder. The snow was adhering well to both the rocks and the underlying ice and traction was never an issue. Judging by the boot prints in the snow, some hikers went bare-boot, but I chose spikes car-to-car. The trail is still too bony for snowshoes, with maybe 6-8" of powder snow on the sides of the trail.
A beautiful, quiet day on The Wildcats. I met only three other hikers. |
