Comments
Comments: As Becca Munroe noted in her recent report, the shiny new Welton Falls Trail (North) is open for business; it was completed on 11/16/2023. This relocated route now meets Elwell Trail 0.5 mi. northwest of Bear Mtn. The new trailhead and parking are still on Valley View Rd. in Hebron, 0.5 mi. from Hobart Hill Rd.

In a nutshell:

+ The former trailhead was closed down when the private land it was on changed ownership in 2022.
+ The trail has since been completely relocated onto town-owned/conserved land.
+ The new route was originally laid out using parts of snowmobile corridor 151 but was ultimately moved off the corridor onto newly cut sections of footpath.
+ This new trail makes getting out to the middle of Elwell Trail a bit more difficult but also makes getting to Bear Mtn. easier. It also makes for an interesting point-to-point traverse route over Bear in combination with Bear Mtn. and Elwell trails.
+ I was told that the parking would be eventually plowed but that might not happen this year.

A huge thanks goes out to the local volunteers for making this happen. They are responsible for keeping these outlying and historic Cardigan-area trails going.

Conditions today were mostly a couple inches of crusty snow but there was also bare ground too. The only mud is at the snowmobile route crossing near the start of the trail. Either bare boots or spikes would have been fine today.
